New Year Newsroom Resolutions

If you’re a News Editor finding it hard to come up with New Year’s Resolutions for 2009, may I make three suggestions - other than hiring me ;)

CREDIT CRUNCH It will continue to be the biggest story around. Encourage responsible reporting of the financial situation from your team. Scrutinize each further warning of doom and whether it deserves air time and actively help your audience with advice from qualified experts.

MANAGE AND LEAD In these uncertain times, the part of the News Editor’s job which is supporting the team is more important than ever. It may take a change of thinking and working but you need to find more time for your journalists. Ask how they are feeling, give constructive feedback and praise when a good job’s done. Happier troops mean a happier newsroom which means more productive journalists!

BE CREATIVE It is a HUGE deal to me. Getting the story and telling it accurately and fairly is only half the job done. Ask the reporter, how are you going to translate the tale into a great piece of radio? Challenge your team members to spend more time thinking about treatments, as well as their journalism.

What are your resolutions for the newsroom? Let me know.

Happy new year!!

The Final Countdown

As I write I have less than a week left at the studios of BBC London 94.9

I have to say it doesn't feel like it - with work to be done on Sony entries next week, Christmas programming to finish and a couple of compliance workshops to run, I'm still in the thick of it.

But, this time next week, it'll be over and I will miss everyone hugely.

At the same time, the new business is getting a real momentum behind it at the moment.

I can't talk about many of the projects yet because I'm still confirming details but I'll be in the Czech Republic in the new year lecturing journalists and news editors.

There's another international job coming through and a possible project built around the Oscars.

So, although it'll be hard to leave my friends and workmates at BBC London, there are some exciting times ahead!
